In recent years there has been a visible push towards companies and people becoming more environmentally aware and sustainable.
There are now more people recycling, switching off lights and computers than ever before. Everybody has a part to play in the fight for a sustainable future. The Guild of students has made changes in order to be more environmentally friendly. Students and staff alike have been encouraged to switch off unnecessary lights, plug sockets, and recycle where ever possible.
There have been key movements and campaigns at the Guild already this year:
If you want more information about the campaign please visit www.studentswitchoff.co.uk. Having identified the climate chaos the world is facing Guild Council made a pledge to affiliate with the ‘Stop Climate Chaos’ coalition, a commitment was made to support and publicise ‘Stop Climate Chaos’ campaigns through a number of mechanisms including promotion and awareness raising on the Guild of Students website.
Stop Climate Chaos brings together many different organisations, student unions and trade unions together to form a united voice to campaign about climate change. If you would like any more information about how you can get involved or about the campaign please visit www.stopclimatechaos.org
Student switch off is a national campaign designed to encourage all students who live in halls of residence to save energy. From switching off a television at the wall to making sure windows are closed while the heating is on. To add a bit of excitement there is a competition between halls to see who can save the most energy, prizes can be won by individuals or the entire hall, prizes include solar powered ipod chargers.
Sound impact is ran by the National Union of Students services, where best practise is shared between unions. The unions taking part are assessed on the performance of their organisation, so at the Guild the fact Redbrick is printed on recycled paper earns us points, and all the plants in the offices mean we’re helping to be green! Once assessed each union is graded, last year we achieved bronze status and we are currently waiting to see what we’ve been awarded this year.
