 Running a Group

Volunteering to be a student group committee member can be a very rewarding experience, and the Guild’s Student Development department is here to help you as you run your group. If you’ve ever got any questions about how to do something, would like some advice or would just like a chat about how things are going, just get in touch and we’ll see what we can do; the chances are that if you find something a challenge, it’s happened to other groups or to past committees, so you don’t need to figure out everything on your own – we’re here to help you run your groups. Elsewhere on this area of the website (see menu on the left) you can find access to lots of information that you might find useful, or just come in to chat to staff, or email studentgroups@guild.bham.ac.uk or telephone 0121 2512424, or you can book an appointment if you want a more comprehensive talk, or you can always ask the Vice-President Activities and Development (VPAD), vpad@guild.bham.ac.uk

As a committee member, you can put something back into a group that you enjoyed being a member of, and shape it’s future. Your role is to listen to what your members want to do and try to make it happen – through running activities or adjusting the focus of the group. How much time and commitment that you put in partly depends on the group you’re involved with, but it’s largely up to you – you can just keep your group running, or you can try to make it even bigger and better for your members by trying new things or updating your procedures. Whatever your preference, we’d advise that you talk about your plans with the rest of your committee so that everyone can be honest about what they think so everyone knows what to expect, but if your committee does disagree or fall out, we can try to help you get back on track.

As a committee member you’re volunteering your time so you can join the volunteering accreditation scheme to track how much time you’re spending organising your group (and get PSA points if you want). We can support you by providing training and help you identify the skills that you’ve gained or improved through your volunteering, which can include leadership, team-working, event planning and management, budgeting, fundraising, publicity, time-management and loads of other skills that you’ll take with you after you graduate.
