As the oldest society in the Guild of Students, AstroSoc aims to spread our love and adoration of astronomy, space, and astrophysics to our brilliant student and staff community, of all years and degrees!
We frequently arrange and host talks by experts from all aspects of astronomical-based backgrounds, as well as observations of the stars and planets on the physics building rooftop (using the coolest telescopes since James Webb, of course). During the year, we also host trips to the local observatory, the astronomy-themed bar crawl and Christmas quiz, and our annual camping trip at the end of the year!
To combat the cloudy skies of Birmingham, we often run Short Notice Observations (SNOs) from time to time when the weather is at its best, ensuring that members have plenty of opportunities to observe with us! We have a number of society-owned telescopes and other astronomical equipment from antique (but very good) refractors to modern computerised scopes. We hope you come along to these!
We hold most of our events on Tuesday evenings and aim to observe afterwards. Annual membership costs £4 and allows us to provide quality events all year round while contributing to the upkeep of our telescopes. Keep an eye on our social media channels for events and updates. You can follow us on Facebook and Instagram (uobastrosoc), as well as our Discord channel (https://discord.gg/jHPfs9sjpm). By joining our society, you will also receive regular email updates from us.
We look forward to seeing you all in person, and wish you all the best as you settle into university. Here's to a wonderful year!
Per aspera, ad astra (through hardship, to the stars).
