At your Guild, we measure our success not just by what we achieve, but by the impact we have on the environment , something we call our ‘Green Impact’.
This is part of a programme led by the National Union of Students (NUS), which helps us benchmark our progress against other students’ unions while continually improving our understanding of environmental issues and how we can drive meaningful change.
Read on to discover how we’re making a difference.
What We’ve Done
Over the years, the Guild has introduced a range of initiatives to become more sustainable and environmentally responsible, including:
- Installing solar panels on Tennis Courts accommodation.
- Improving energy efficiency across the Guild through loft insulation, sealing external windows, and upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting
- Monitoring our electricity and gas usage on an ongoing basis
- Reducing single-use plastics across all our venues
- Cutting energy consumption by 14.9% in the past year by upgrading lighting systems, powering down PCs daily, and providing students and staff with free LED bulbs and smart plugs
- Passing a motion to boycott fossil fuel recruiters – read Redbrick’s article all about it.
- Working in partnership with the University to achieve Fairtrade Accreditation
- Ensuring sustainability is a priority when selecting partners
- Hosting our annual Green Week to raise awareness and promote more sustainable lifestyles
- Approving our Sustainability Strategy, which will guide our ambitions through to 2030. We are working closely with the University to ensure both organisations put students at the heart of delivering this positive change
And that’s just the beginning.
Our current Green Impact ranking is Excellent, and we remain committed to building on this progress every year. By continuously improving, we aim to protect our accreditation and play our part in creating a greener, more sustainable future for everyone.
