Midlands, Mediterranean, Middle-Earth: Tolkien and The Classics

Gandalf, Aragorn, Arwen, Frodo ... It doesn't sound very classical. But J. R. R. Tolkien was thoroughly trained in Greek and Latin, and went to university to read classics. Philip will be suggesting that the legacy of the ancient Mediterranean world comes through in his work in some unexpected ways in some unexpected places.
