Hi, my name is Holly, and I’m a second-year UoB student and Residence Life Assistant. This year, Go Green Week runs from Monday 24 to Friday 28 March, and it’s a great opportunity to consider the small changes we can make to be kind to the environment, as well as to ourselves. Therefore, I’m sharing my 5 sustainable ways to boost your wellbeing!

Explore local green spaces

A great way to boost your wellbeing is to get out and explore all the nature that Birmingham has to offer. There are some lovely green spaces that are just a short walk from campus, such as Cannon Hill Park and Cotteridge Park, which are well worth a visit. Or, why not join us for our Selly Oak Nature Walk on Thursday 27 March? We’ll be doing some observational drawings, texture rubbings and documenting the nature we see, which will be sure to give you a greater appreciation of the local area.

Upcycle!

Got lots of empty bottles lying around in your accommodation? Had lots of leaflets through your letterbox? This is a perfect opportunity to get crafty and unwind by upcycling! Empty wine bottles can be repurposed into beautiful vases. Equally, cut-outs from leaflets can make perfect scrapbooking material or wall decorations - the possibilities are endless.

Hit the charity shops

If you’re looking to brighten up your accommodation, charity shops are a great place to go to find unique, second-hand items. There are lots of lovely charity shops located just off-campus in Harborne. Not only will you be giving your accommodation a boost, but you’ll also be repurposing items and supporting local charities too.

Cook with your friends

A great way to reduce your food waste is to cook meals with your friends. Ask your friends what food they have that is near its expiry date and using what you have, see if you can make a dish together! This is a fun and inexpensive way to socialise with each other whilst doing your bit for the environment.

Pop into the Residence Life Office!

If you’re a student living in university-owned or partner accommodation, the Residence Life team are on-hand to chat through all things student life. From academic queries to wellbeing support, we’re a friendly peer-to-peer advice service that are here to help you make the most of your time in accommodation. The Residence Life Office is located in Shackleton, next to the Duck and Scholar, and is open Monday to Friday, 4-8pm during term time. No appointment needed – just pop in to chat to us anytime!

From our 'No Buy' Sports Night to our Great Green Giveaway, there’s lots to get involved in for Go Green Week. Check out the Go Green Week Events page to see what’s on at the Guild.
