Upcoming Policies

‘The Guild is a Pro-Choice Institution’ motion was submitted through the old democratic system of Beliefs and Commitments. This is now up for renewal as a policy.

It reads:
“The members of the Guild of Students believe, as far as is permitted by law, it should be an inherently pro-choice Student Union. The Guild’s members believe in the fundamental rights of students to choose abortion as a form of healthcare and make informed choices about their own bodily autonomy.
The Guild’s members denounce anti-choice protests and are concerned about the distress and intimidation they can cause to students. The Guild, as far as is financially practicable and permitted by law, should offer a full range of free, impartial, confidential and non-judgmental advice to students who may become pregnant that informs students of their full range of options”.

Upon review, it was concluded that this motion requires wider student input. Therefore, the Guild will use the Guild Action Group process to review this motion to deliver a policy that can (at the discretion of the action group) be taken forward to an All-Student Vote.

The Welfare and Community Officer has outlined the following membership for the Action Group, with the next meeting scheduled online for Wednesday15th January 2025 at 3pm.
•    Welfare and Community Officer (Chair)
•    Part-Time Women’s Officer
•    3-4x Open Student Spaces
•    2-3x relevant Guild Staff for minuting and advice

If you are interested in one of the open spaces, have any questions regarding the motion or next steps, these can be sent to studentvoice@guild.bham.ac.uk by no later than 10am midday on Monday 6th January 2025.
