Hi everyone,

I’m Hope, your Welfare and Community Officer at the Guild. I know the winter period can be tough – it’s a busy time, and balancing revision or assignments with trying to relax isn’t always easy. You’re not alone if you feel this way, and I wanted to share some tips to help you look after yourself over the holidays:

Set a balanced schedule

While it can be tempting to work throughout the holidays, this can sometimes lead to burnout. Create a realistic plan for your revision or assignments, balancing study time with breaks to relax and recharge. Use your downtime to do something you enjoy—like getting some fresh air, exercising, or watching your favourite festive movie. Taking care of your wellbeing will help you focus better when you return to your work.

Stay connected

Although the winter period is a wonderful time, it can also feel lonely at times. It’s important to make an effort to stay connected with friends, family and peers. Whether it’s through a quick video call, a conversation on a group chat, or an evening spent with loved ones, social interaction can really help to combat isolation and lift your mood. If you’re studying, consider arranging virtual or in-person study sessions with others to stay motivated and avoid working alone.

If you’re on campus over Christmas, don’t forget to check out the University’s Christmas on Campus page for events happening near you. For those spending the holidays away from home, the International Christmas page has helpful tips and ideas to make the most of the season, wherever you are.

Remember support services

Please remember that support is still available over the winter break if you need it. You can access UBHeard, the University’s confidential listening and support service, on 0800 368 5819 24/7, 365 days a year. The UoBE ready page also has great resources to help you prepare for your assessments, discover new study spaces and manage your workload effectively. You don’t have to face things alone – don’t hesitate to reach out if you need someone to talk to.

So, these are my tips – I wish you a safe, peaceful and happy holiday season!
