*** Please note, our membership fees are split into two costs. The initial £25 will cover your first 4 weeks of training (excluding a taster session) and your general society membership, giving you access to socials, competitions and other events organised by the society, as well as the group chat, where you can get advice from our coaches. The additional £75 fee covers the full year of training, which will be dropped to £40 for those joining in term two. You’ll only need to purchase the bolt on if you want to continue coming to the sessions all year round, where you will have access to an in-person coach. ***
Welcome to Powersoc, where we aim to create an encouraging and nurturing environment for all interested in powerlifting, both as a sport or just as a hobby. Our goal is to widen access to and inspire an increased participation in strength sports. Powerlifting itself revolves around three main lifts, the squat, bench and deadlift, with the goal of lifting as much as possible.
Everyone is welcome to train with us, from those who have never picked up a barbell before, to seasoned lifters looking to compete. Whatever you’re looking for, we hope the sessions will be a fun and social environment to get coaching advice and train with others.
We offer weekly training sessions alongside weekly socials, including sports night and pub trips, with intentions of hosting more social sobers throughout the year. Sessions are held Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons inside the UoB Sport and Fitness performance gym. Every member is entitled to a minimum of one hour of training per week.
Our two memberships, competitive and casual, are functionally identical, but give us a rough idea of how many members intend to compete (you can always change your mind/ there are no obligations). In terms of competitions, last year we won a Varsity competition against Warwick and Coventry, where we encouraged as many people as possible to compete regardless of previous experience. A few of our members qualified and competed for the UoB team at the British University Championships (BUCs). For those interested in going to BUCs 2025, the qualifying totals can be found here: British Classic Qualifying Totals 2025 (within the ‘Uni’ column).
We also hold an annual mock meet to give new lifters some competing experience in a friendly atmosphere and an opportunity to max out with the support of others for those who want to compete in a more relaxed environment.
We look forward to seeing you at the gym!
