Democracy Review

Democracy Review

Fancy earning almost £120 while helping us to reform our democratic and representational structures?

Democracy is extremely important to us as we're a fully democratic organisation, run by students, for students! We're currently working on an exciting project to review all our democratic structures and processes here at your Guild.  We are reviewing the ways in which you can engage with us, and how we are run.

We’re looking for 15 students to join us in working groups to work with current members of the Guild team, to co-create a proposal to reform the democratic and representational structures of the Guild.

There will be five working groups, each lasting two hours, held online through video conferencing, and if you are chosen, you will be paid £10.90 per hour for your time.  You will need to attend all five of the working groups and you will be paid £109.00 for the working groups, plus an additional one off payment of £10.00 for any additional preparatory work.

The working groups will be held online, on the following days and you MUST BE AVAILABLE TO ATTEND EACH WORKING GROUP:

  • Friday 3rd February 2023, from 2-4pm, Mandela Room, Guild Building
  • Friday 10th February 2023, from 2-4pm, Rosa Parks Room, Guild Building
  • Friday 17th February 2023, from 2-4pm, Mandela Room, Guild Building
  • Tuesday 21st February 2023, from 11am - 1pm, Mandela Room, Guild Building
  • Friday 24th February 2023, from 2-4pm, Mandela Room, Guild Building

Interested?  To be considered for the role, we’re looking for the following:

  • Current experience of being a student here at the University of Birmingham
  • Some experience of sharing your perspective to make improvements to a project, service or initiative
  • A diverse membership so we’re looking for students from all sites, all study types and we encourage applications from students identifying as being part of an underrepresented community
  • You do not have to have knowledge of our current democratic and representative structures.  We would like to have a mix of engaged and unengaged students

We are working with a consultancy called Alkhemy who will be running and administering the working groups on our behalf.  Alkhemy will contact you about your participation in the working groups.  Your name and email address will be provided to Alkhemy, but no sensitive data will be shared with them.

Apply to become a member of our Democratic Review Working Group below.  Please note that applications will close once all 15 positions have been appointed, based on ensuring a diverse group of student voices and perspectives are included as part of this group.  Please apply as soon as possible!
