Ideas
Starting April 2024 the daily car parking charges for students will rise 150% from £1 a day to £2.50 a day. During a cost of living crisis and many students already struggling with bills a sharp increase in the daily parking charges like this could put students into financial stress which could impact their well-being and studies.
I propose that the daily parking charge does either not increase or does so but at a reduced rate of around 25% - 50%.
If there is to be an increase in parking charges, the car park should have better wifi internet access for paying online, as this currently never works unless you walk into the Psychology building opposite or towards the North Gate and have the drive to the parking maintained as it is always littered with potholes.
Equally, the roads around campus are already congested and blocked with students and staff unable to pay the parking charge or who do not have a pass, an increase in parking charges would likely see this issue rise.
Policy
Guild should remain on the student's side and communicate with campus services and parking management to reduce or stop the parking charge change. Guild should observe a more gradual increase of parking charges over time, if this option is chosen, and not allow dramatic increase like this one.
Scrutiny
If you are paying for parking, what would you expect of the parking facilities?
If there was to be parking increase, what rate would you expect?
How will officers better support commuting students?
Do you agree that the roads around university are already congested with student and staff cars who unable to pay the parking charges currently in place?
Questions
When will the university better support commuting students who live further away and have no choice but to drive and pay a parking charge? The university is penalising its students whose only option is to drive!
