Currently all Guild student staff are paid the same flat rate across all job roles and hours of working. The only difference is if they are an Assistant member of staff or Senior Assistant member of staff.
I believe Guild student staff should be paid an additional amount during unsocialable hours. This is an industry standard practice for acknowledging the impact working unsociable hours has against members of staff. Whilst staff members do work unsociable hours of their own choosing, and it is their responsibility to plan this along their weekly schedule, there is still a significant impact to the sleep schedules of staff with little reward compared to working shifts during standard hours.
Employers such as McDonald's usually pay £1 extra per hour from 12am until the next day's morning shift. The Guild should also carry this change across.
I propose a wage uplift of £1 extra per hour from 12am to 6am for all Guild student staff. This will mostly impact events staff as they are the most likely group of staff to work unsociable hours. I do not believe this unfairly impacts members of student staff who do not work unsociable hours as groups of staff such as Community Wardens or Reception Staff fundamentally do not have to work these unsociable hours as part of their job and the point of me raising this idea is to improve the rate of pay and therefore overall compensation for working unsociable hours. If such groups of staff were to ever work unsociable hours too, they should also be entitled to a wage uplift during those hours.
This of course will result in a financial impact to the Guild, the overall cost of labour. However, the Guild usually receives high revenue during most of these unsociable hours periods - eg club nights - so I believe it would be a fair and sustainable increase to the Guild's costs.
Overall, I believe that members of the Guild of Students and the staff of the Guild of Students should agree with this Idea. The finance of students is always a topic of discussion, and the remuneration of hard working student staff during these times of such a risen cost of living is extremely important to the student working life balance.
Please note whilst I have only mentioned Student Staff in this Idea, I believe this should also be expanded to all hourly-paid Guild staff working during these periods. I simply wish to raise the concern to Student Staff within this Idea.
