Guild of Students Student Groups

Student Development Office

The Student Development department, commonly known as StuDev, is the home of student groups and volunteering - if you’ve any questions about joining or running a society, volunteering group or liberation/representation/residents’ association. We’re here to help you make the most of your time volunteering at University, whether by helping you run activities or helping with training or recognising the time and effort you’ve put into helping other people.

The Student Development department is on the ground floor of the Guild of Students, near reception. There are three parts of the physical department:

Student Development Counter – An advice desk for committee members or anyone looking to join a student group, or start volunteering. You can talk to our student staff team and they’ll assist you with a wide range of general queries about finance, health and safety, event planning, University room bookings, volunteer recognition and anything else. The Counter is open 11am-5.30pm, Mon-Thurs and 11am-4.30pm on Fridays during term-time.

It is usually open between 12-3pm during holidays – however if you’re making a special trip to Birmingham to see us outside of term, you might want to confirm we’re open, as we do close occasionally for training, as well as bank holidays and for short periods during the Christmas and Easter holidays.

Full-time (core) Staff Office - In a glass-fronted office, we have six full-time staff. Unless specifically requested, please see if the Counter can help with your queries first.

Committee Member Area – A space for committee members to have informal meetings, pigeonholes for post and PCs and a printer/copier for committee members to use (usernames and passwords are the same as for your group’s email address).

Six of the PCs have Photoshop and InDesign installed for use for producing publicity materials for your group. Printer/copier charges are automatically debited from your group’s email account each month; you can do black and white or colour printing/copying on either A4 or A3 paper, and you can also scan documents/images and send them to your group’s email account.

The resource area is accessible whenever Guild Reception is staffed, which is generally 8am-9pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 8am-10pm Tuesdays and Fridays, although it may close earlier if there is a full building event, such as Sports Night. On weekends, the area is accessible 10am-8pm. During holidays, there are reduced opening hours: 8.30am-5pm Mon-Fri, closed at weekends.
