Become a Street Champion

At the University of Birmingham we are very fortunate to be surrounded by a diverse community, full of students and local residents from all walks of life. We are recruiting Street Champions: volunteers who will play an active role in the local community. If you care for your neighbours and want to help us create a clean, safe place to live, then our initiative is ideal for you!

Street Champions are volunteers who will act as the ‘eyes and ears’ of our community. Each volunteer will be allocated a road/(s) in Bournbrook that they are responsible for, with a view to keep them clean, green and safe and aligned to support community cohesion, via community events and regular reports

In this role you will have the opportunity to meet an array of people from your local community, and have the chance to inform the work of the Community Wardens by sharing any concerns and championing any ideas you may have.

What will I be doing?

Role Title: Street Champion

Responsible to: Community Warden / Community Warden Coordinator

Expected time commitment: 1 – 2 hours per week

Summary of role:

To volunteer your time to be the ‘eyes and ears’ of your community, reporting on your findings and any issues raised to the Community Wardens. To support with community activities and events eg. litter picks, canal grapples and Street Watch. Each Street Champion will be responsible for a road/(s) in the Bournbrook area.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • To be responsible for a road/(s) in the Bournbrook area, reporting any issues, problems or reoccurring key themes
  • To be involved in opportunities to promote a clean, green, safe and cohesive community
  • To encourage opportunities for students to get involved with local community events such as litter picks
  • To maintain regular contact and receive support from the Community Wardens and Community Warden Coordinator
  • To complete training relevant to the role
  • To signpost students towards Guild/University services as appropriate eg. Community Wardens, Guild Advice, the Student Hub.
